Career fair offers students chance to connect with their futures
TEMPLE, TX, January 25, 2019 – Temple Independent School District’s Career and Technical Education programs, collectively known as Wildcat Workforce, hosted the 5th annual 8th Grade Career Days for Lamar, Bonham and Travis Middle Schools. Eighth grade students from each campus spent the morning at Temple High School seeing program demonstrations given by Wildcat Workforce student ambassadors as well as connecting with local businesses.
“This has become a staple event to highlight career pathway options and provide interactive conversations with community business partners for our incoming freshman,” said Denise Ayres, director of career and technical education for Temple ISD. “This year was particularly special because they got to see our brand new facility, which mirrors what they will experience in the workplace.”
The Career Fair is a three-day event with over 600 students visiting Temple High School. Local industries are invited to participate in the event to help students identify not only potential careers in the community but to also learn more about the companies, their expectations of employees and the industries they represent.
“This is a key way to demonstrate the relevance of education to our students,” said Ayres. Nearly 20 local business participated in each day of the event to spark curiosity and interest from their future employees. “Another example of the opportunities a student at Temple ISD has due to our amazing business partners,” said Dr. Bobby Ott, superintendent of Temple ISD.
Participating businesses included: Baylor Scott & White, City of Temple Municipal Court, Cornerstone Gardens, Hampton Inn, McLane Company, McLane Intel, Panel Specialist Incorporated, PDI, Performance Food Group, Temple Chamber of Commerce, Temple College Business Careers, Temple Economic Development Corporation, Temple Fire & Rescue, Temple Machine Shop, Wilsonart International, Woodward Creative Group, and Workforce Solutions of Central Texas.
“I appreciate our businesses for their support during this event,” said Ott. “Combine this with our new state of the art facility and you’ll find no better career and technical education program anywhere.”
The Wildcat Workforce programs at TISD are strategically designed to train students for life-long success in high-wage, high-skill, and in-demand occupations and career fields. Many TISD Wildcat Workforce programs allow students to earn college credit in escrow through Articulated Credit, as well as direct college credit through Dual Credit agreements with area colleges. Additionally, students in these programs have opportunity to earn industry recognized certifications and licenses, a solid foundation to start their careers.
